2009 Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival to Open with Mendelssohn Favorites!

Saturday, June 6 marks the beginning of the highly-anticipated 2009 Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival! Beginning at 8:00 p.m. at the Seligman Performing Arts Center, Opening Night’s program will be centered on the 2009 Festival theme: Mendelssohn and the Dawn of Romanticism. The Seligman Performing Arts Center is located at 22305 West Thirteen Mile Road in Beverly Hills, on the campus of Detroit Country Day School.
Each year in June, the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival brings an impressive contingent of internationally-renowned artists to metro Detroit for two weeks of world-class chamber music performances. 2009 is no exception – Opening Night alone will include performances by acclaimed pianist and Festival Artistic Director, James Tocco; beloved Israeli-American cellist, Yehuda Hanani; former Cleveland Quartet cellist, Paul Katz; and the exciting and energetic Biava Quartet, among others.

METRO DETROIT, MI - 3/27/09 - Each year in June, the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival brings an impressive contingent of internationally-renowned artists to metro Detroit for two weeks of world-class chamber music performances. 200 years after the composer's birth, the 16th - annual Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival will highlight the music of Felix Mendelssohn and the Romantic era. Nearly 20 concerts will be presented throughout metro Detroit from June 6 - 21, 2009.
Artistic Director James Tocco has programmed remarkable works stretching from Beethoven, Schubert and Chopin to Debussy, Copland, and even jazz composer Wynton Marsalis! Of special note will be the music of Stephen Hartke , the Festival's Composer-in-Residence for 2009. A performance exclusively featuring Hartke's chamber works will take place on Monday, June 15th at 7:30 p.m. at Temple Beth El in Bloomfield Hills.
Always a favorite among Festival patrons, pianist Jeremy Denk will participate this June in his fifth consecutive year with the Festival. Denk returns to Detroit after making his debut with the Detroit Symphony this year in March. Other returning artists include violinists Ani Kavafian, Ida Kavafian, and Yehonatan Berick, violist Kim Kashkashian, and cellists Paul Katz, Yehuda Hanani, and Debra Fayroian. Also joining the roster this year will be the DSO's superstar cellist, Robert deMaine.
Guest ensembles for 2009 include Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings, as well as the Biava Quartet and eighth blackbird, both former participants in the Festival's Shouse Institute. A program designed to help young ensembles that are emerging to professional status, the Shouse Institute brings talented young musicians from across the country to receive coaching from and perform with the Festival's more senior artists. Several years after making their Festival debuts, eighth blackbird and the Biava Quartet return this year as Shouse Institute success stories.
Tickets for the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival will be available to the public beginning April 15. Tickets to single events may be purchased, in addition to several discounted Subscription options ranging from $80 (three concerts) to $165 (seven concerts). April 15, 2008 The Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival's fifteenth annual series will occur June 14 – 29, 2008 and will feature the music of the French school of composers. During the Festival, musicians of international stature will perform at 19 concerts throughout southeastern Michigan.
